CBB Project Goals

The CBB Mellon Project for Library and Information Technology

addresses the challenges of helping students and faculty learn how to

use the information-rich electronic environment more effectively in

teaching and learning. The project provides an opportunity for Colby,

Bates and Bowdoin librarians and computing professionals to reconsider

how we provide training for faculty and students in information resources,

and to work collaboratively to develop mechanisms for support of faculty

members who wish to incorporate the use of information resources, and

new technologies like videoconferencing, into their teaching. The CBB

videoconferencing systems are now in place and can be a focal point

of your project and the planning between the CBB faculty doing the project.

Specific programs funded through this Mellon grant include developing

and implementing the simultaneous search of the three library catalogs

(CBB Search), the online materials loan request (CBB Request) and a

three-way videoconferencing system. The grant also establishes joint

user education programs for libraries and information services at the

three colleges, as well as a faculty stipend program.

A. Faculty Stipend Program Goals

The CBB Mellon Project Library and Information Technology

Faculty Stipend Program provides direct support to faculty who wish

to explore opportunities to work collaboratively with colleagues at

the three colleges to use information resources more effectively in

their classes.

The program places special emphasis on the development

of partnerships of faculty with librarians and computing professionals

to accomplish their goals and on the advantages of sharing information

resources between the three colleges. Through this project, the Colleges

hope to develop collaborative relationships between faculty, librarians

and computing professionals on individual campuses and across campuses.

B. Project Focus

Faculty projects should focus on methods of using information

resources to enhance teaching and learning in the classroom. Projects

must involve significant collaboration with faculty from at least one

of the other colleges and encourage the development of partnerships

with librarians and computing professionals. Projects may involve applications

of existing technologies or the development of new technological resources

or materials.

Faculty are encouraged to incorporate the new video conferencing

capabilities at the three campuses into their proposals. These capabilities

are particularly well-suited for collaborative research among faculty

and for small classes or seminars in which the flexibility afforded

by the technology might facilitate a richer learning experience for

the students across campuses."

Previous project summaries that might for the basis for

a collaborative project are available on the WWW at http://

www.cbbnet.org

Eligibility:

Colby, Bates and Bowdoin teaching faculty may submit

grant proposals. Projects must involve two faculty members from different

CBB institutions.

Faculty Project Support:

Each faculty member participating in a collaborative

project will receive a $3,000 stipend, technical support from computing

staff and consultation from librarians on information resources. Some

funding may be available for travel and training that directly supports

the completion of the proposed project and for hiring of student assistants

needed to complete work on the projects. All stipend recipients must

be willing to share the outcome of their projects through a report that

can be posted on the WWW and possibly a presentation or demonstration

with colleagues at Colby, Bates and Bowdoin.

GRANT FUNDS MAY NOT BE USED FOR THE PURCHASE OR LEASE

OF COMPUTER HARDWARE, PERIPHERAL EQUIPMENT, OR SOFTWARE.

Faculty must discuss the availability of campus funding

for computer equipment and software with their individual campus computing

organizations when developing their proposals.

C. How to Apply:

Faculty liaison's from each campus are your primary first

contact point. This person will help you with the application process

and with feasibility information regarding project needs. Please contact

the faculty member from your institution. The proposal should be submitted

to the faculty liaison at the home institution of the project leader

by April 10, 2000. The following faculty members are serving as campus

liaisons:

Bates College

Kirk Read, French

Bowdoin College

Rosemary Roberts,

Mathematics

Colby College

Michael Donihue, Economics

It is strongly advised that applicants make contact with

this faculty liaison at the very beginning of their project planning.

This person will facilitate contact with appropriate library and information

technology personnel who can greatly assist in the remainder of the

application process and in the project's completion. Applicants are

also strongly encouraged to consult some conceptual

examples that might for the basis for a collaborative project are

available on the WWW at http:// www.cbbnet.org

If you previously received a grant from CBB Mellon Project

for Library and Information Technology Faculty Stipend Program last

April, this new submission must be for a new project or a new or additional

direction for the previous project.

Each proposal should include all of the information and

letters of support described below:

  1. Name of Faculty Project Leader and other faculty participants

    with campus affiliations.

  1. Narrative description of the project and its goals

and how they will be used in the targeted course or courses, how

the intended courses will be enhanced by the addition of these materials

and what impact they will have on student learning and faculty teaching.

Clearly define the information resources to be used and the role

of each faculty member in the collaborative effort. Please also

describe how this project relates to work already in progress, if

applicable. See previous project summaries at http://

    www.cbbnet.org

  2. Letter(s) of support from faculty co-applicants

    for stipends.

  3. The User Education Committee members from you institution

will collaborate with you in the development of your proposal. Please
